Driven to Give: Ryan and Beccy Hunter-Reay’s Race Against Cancer

The Indy 500 champion has had plenty of success on the track, but now he and wife Beccy are translating their passion for racing into promoting cancer prevention and awareness.

Racing hasn’t always been simple for IndyCar driver Ryan Hunter-Reay. Though it’s easy to look at the defending Indy 500 champion now and say he makes it look simple, there was a time when he was struggling just to find a team and keep racing. But a strong will and perseverance guided him to the peak of his profession. That drive was a major factor in helping him and his wife Beccy—a former off-road racing driver, Champ Car World Series pit reporter and sister of legendary racer Robby Gordon—face a personal tragedy when Ryan’s mother, Lydia, lost her year-long battle with colon cancer in 2009.

Farm to In South Florida

Anyone who has rushed fresh cobs of sweet corn from the field to their grill, or inhaled the intoxicating aroma of a newly picked strawberry knows that seeking out locally grown foods can be extremely rewarding. But eating local has other positives as well: It supports the community’s economy, helps the environment and, as many experts would agree, is often the healthier choice.

Expansion of Sun Trolley's Neighborhood Link will Decrease Wait Times

Fort Lauderdale, FL – What's better than one Sun Trolley? Two Sun Trolleys! Starting Monday, November 3, 2014, an additional bus will operate along the Neighborhood Link, which covers the area from Andrews Avenue west to State Road 7 and SW 6 Street north to NW 16 Street.

The additional bus will increase the number of daily round trips from the Broward Central Bus Terminal from four to seven and is expected to cut wait times in half. Operating hours will remain 8:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

"Of the seven routes the Sun Trolley operates, the Neighborhood Link is one of the busiest in terms of passengers per hour," said Robyn Chiarelli, Sun Trolley's Executive Director. She states that anywhere between 2,100 and 2,750 riders use the Neighborhood Link per month – that is 15 to 20 passengers per hour.

"The goal is to meet customer demand by decreasing wait times and serving more passengers by increasing the number of round trips made on this route," said Chiarelli.

The additional bus is being provided by Broward County Transit, and the additional service is being funded by three different sources: the City of Fort Lauderdale, Northwest-Progresso-Flagler Heights Community Redevelopment Agency, and the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority's New Freedom Grant.

"In all, the Sun Trolley relies on 19 different funding sources to operate its seven Sun Trolley routes and the Riverwalk Water Trolley," said Chiarelli. "When numerous partners come together to help fund an expansion, it really justifies how important they feel this community bus service is to our customers and the community at large."

To track the Sun Trolley and the Riverwalk Water Trolley (IN REAL-TIME!), simply download the award-winning Tracker App. This mobile app for Android and iPhone users provides real time location of all trolleys.
