FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – The Van Horn Law Group today announced the call for entries for the 2016 Debra Van Horn Scholarship. The $1,000 renewable scholarship is given annually to one full-time undergraduate college student who was raised in a single-parent household and is an active participant in their community and current educational institution. Currently accepting applications, the scholarship is named in honor of Debra Van Horn, the single mother of attorney and firm founder Chad Van Horn.
“Van Horn Law Group is a law firm committed to its clients and its community,” said Chad Van Horn. “As a firm that meets regularly with clients struggling with student loan debt, we understand the financial hardships that come with pursuing higher education and how these hardships can escalate in single-parent households.”
Scholarship entrants must have been raised in a single-parent household, have a minimum GPA of 2.5, and be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full-time student at an accredited undergraduate institution of higher education.
Debra Van Horn will have an integral role in the selection process for the scholarship. “I’m honored to be part of the Van Horn Law Group’s effort to promote learning and encourage community involvement,” she says. “I am proud of my son for assisting students who work so hard to pursue higher education.”
Applicants must submit a completed application form and a 60-90 second video demonstrating why they deserve the award. The video should contain a quick introduction (name, where you were raised, name of your current educational institution) and a thoughtful response to the following questions:
- How did you overcome the hardship of growing up in a single-parent household?
- Who or what became major parts of your support system and how did they help?
- Why does this motivate you to pursue a career in helping others?
- How do your interests mirror or align with ours?
The selection process will focus on the content, delivery, and creativity of video submissions which must be received by 11:59:59 PM EST on February 15, 2016. The winner will be determined by mid-April 2016 and announced on the Van Horn Law Group website and social media pages. U.S. citizenship, U.S. national or permanent resident status is required for consideration.
